The Gram-negative bacteria use N-acylated homoserine lactones (AHLs) to sense cell density, which is composed of a homoserine lactone ring (HSL) with varying acyl chain . These diffusible small signaling molecules are synthesized by a member of the LuxI protein family.

One member of the AHL family, N- (3-oxododecanoyl)-L-homoserine lactone, is a signalling molecule (autoinducer) involved in quorum sensing underlying the regulation of expression of several virulence genes dependent on the surrounding bacterial density in Pseudomonas aeruginosa [ 18 ]. Acylated homoserine lactone (AHL)-based quorum sensing (QS) has been reported to be present only in Gram-negative microorganisms. Isolation of a novel Gram-positive microorganism from sea water, capable of producing AHL, is reported here. acylated homoserine lactones (AHLs) with N-(3-oxooctanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone (3-oxo-C8-HSL) being the dominant molecule. Also, some uncommon AHL, N-(3-oxoheptanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone (3-oxo-C7-HSL) and N-(3-oxononanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone (3-oxo-C9-HSL), were produced. 3-oxo-C8-HSL was detected in organs from fish infected with Y. ruckeri. Signaling via acyl-homoserine lactones is the paradigm for QS in Proteobacteria and is particularly well understood in the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The general structure of these compounds consist of a lactone ring with an acyl side chain. The length of the acyl chain is usually between 4–18 carbons and the functionality at the β-carbon position can vary. Many Gram-negative bacteria use acylated homoserine lactones (HSLs) as autoinducers.

Acylated homoserine lactones containing a 3-oxo group were found to rapidly react with oxidized halogens, while acylated homoserine lactones lacking the 3-oxo functionality did not react. The Chromobacterium violaceum CV026 bioassay was used to determine the effects of such reactions on acylated homoserine lactone activity.

Moreover, the release of acylated homoserine lactones reached the threshold for HF-1 biofilm formation in bioaugmented reactors but not in quorum-quenching or non-bioaugmented reactors. N-Acylated homoserine lactones (AHLs) represent a major class of these signal molecules, and are commonly produced by Gram negative bacteria . The QS system in these bacteria usually consists of two components: a LuxI homologue that synthesizes the AHL autoinducer, and a LuxR homologue which is an autoinducer-dependent transcriptional activator [ 7 ].

Abstract Bacteria communicate with one another using chemical signal molecules called autoinducers, and the most prevalent autoinducers used by Gram-negative bacteria are N-acylated homoserine lactones (AHLs). However, AHLs are hardly detected in Shewanella baltica, the specific spoilage organism of Pseudosciaena crocea.
The general structure of these compounds consist of a lactone ring with an acyl side chain. The length of the acyl chain is usually between 4–18 carbons and the functionality at the β-carbon position can vary. The most commonly studied AIs belong to one of the following three categories: acylated homoserine lactones, also referred to as AI-1, used by Gram-negative bacteria; peptide signals, used by Gram-positive bacteria; and AI-2, used by both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Primarily produced by Gram-negative bacteria, acylated homoserine lactones (AHLs) are a class of small neutral lipid molecules composed of a homoserine lactone ring with an acyl chain. AHLs produced by different species of Gram-negative bacteria vary in the length and composition of the acyl side chain, which often contains 4 to 18 carbon atoms. While most bacteria use a class of small signaling molecules called acylated homoserine lactones, or AHLs, to "talk," E. Team spirit: working together, bacteria and other microbes can accomplish much more than they can alone.
