The "Basic Formal Ontology" we used is one of a large number of standard "starting points" you can use to base your ontology off of. These "starting points" (called "Upper Ontologies" or "Top Level Ontologies") vary in the way they choose to logically separate the world, and can vary hugely in their complexity.

The Basic Formal Ontology (BFO) is a formal ontological framework developed by Barry Smith and his associates that consists in a series of sub-ontologies at different levels of granularity. The ontologies are divided into two varieties: continuant (or snapshot) ontologies, comprehending continuant entities such as three-dimensional enduring objects, and occurrent ontologies, comprehending Ontologies are being used in many areas of science to improve clarity and communication of research methods, findings and theories.

Last uploaded: September 4, 2015 Summary; The National Center for Biomedical Ontology was founded as one of the National Centers for Primitive terms in a highest-level ontology such as BFO are terms that are so basic to our understanding of reality that there is no way of defining them in a non-circular fashion. For these, therefore, we can provide only elucidations, supplemented by examples and by axioms. It presents the core features of the Basic Formal Ontology (BFO), now used by over one hundred ontology projects around the world, and offers examples of domain ontologies that utilize BFO. The book also describes Web Ontology Language (OWL), a common framework for Semantic Web technologies. These "starting points" (called "Upper Ontologies" or "Top Level Ontologies") vary in the way they choose to logically separate the world, and can vary hugely in their complexity. Numerous research groups are now utilizing Basic Formal Ontology (BFO) as an upper-level framework to assist in the organization and integration of biomedical information.
